Known as the Navarna (nine-syllable) mantra of the Divine Mother. It invokes Maa Chamunda, who destroyed the demons Chanda and Munda, through the three seed sounds of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali.

The story behind it

In the Durga Saptashati, the demon generals Chanda and Munda attacked the Goddess. From her brow, in fury, emerged Maa Kali, who destroyed them both. Delighted, the Goddess named her Chamunda. This mantra is the heart of the Saptashati path.

  • During Navratri, especially with Durga Saptashati

  • When you need courage, protection or the removal of negativity

How to chant
  1. Sit facing east or north, with a straight back.
  2. Light a diya if you can, and take three slow breaths.
  3. Hold the mala in the right hand; move one bead for each chant, without crossing the meru (head) bead.
  4. Chant clearly, aloud or softly, keeping the meaning in mind.
  5. End with a moment of silence and gratitude.
